Aoraki / Mount Cook: what time does it glow at sunrise?

Short answer: 7 Nov 2026: First light on Aoraki at 06:06; the red-to-gold glow lasts until about 06:38. Be at Hooker Lake or Mount Cook Village by 05:36.

New Zealand's highest peak lights up pink at dawn above the Hooker Valley. The summit sees the sun several minutes before the village because it looks out over the low Mackenzie Basin.

Plan it

The Hooker Valley Track to the lake takes about 1.5 hours each way: start with a headtorch. Mount Cook Village gives the view without the walk. The glow needs a clear sky towards the east as well as over the peak.

Questions

What time is the sunrise glow on Aoraki?

7 Nov 2026: First light on Aoraki at 06:06; the red-to-gold glow lasts until about 06:38. Be at Hooker Lake or Mount Cook Village by 05:36. The time moves through the year; pick your date above.

How much earlier does Aoraki catch the sun than the valley?

About 10 minutes before a sunrise on a flat horizon at Hooker Lake or Mount Cook Village, and the valley itself stays in the mountains' shadow for longer.

Which month has the earliest and latest first light?

January 06:07, February 06:50, March 07:27, April 07:04, May 07:38, June 08:02, July 08:00, August 07:27, September 06:35, October 06:41, November 05:56, December 05:43 (15th of each month).

How is this calculated?

A summit high above its surroundings looks down on its own horizon, so it sees the sun before anything below it. For each date we find the moment the sun's upper edge clears the skyline as seen from the summit (allowing for the dip of the horizon, refraction and higher ridges nearby). The red, then orange, then gold glow lasts until the sun is about 5° higher. Expect the real moment within about 5 minutes.
